Income tax is a tax on all income borne by taxpayers of the country. But, before you get into filing your income tax returns, you need to keep in hand all the financial documents, like investment proofs, Form 26AS, interest income proofs, and salary slips. Here is a guide on Form 16, its components, along with its eligibility and requirements.

What is Form 16?

Form 16 is a certificate of deduction of tax at sources, issued by employers (mandated by Section 203 of the Income Tax Act, 1961) to their employees. The companies use this form to provide details of tax deductions to their employees and include information like the amount of tax deducted, date of submission to the IT department, etc.

According to the income tax slab rates for FY 2021-22, the basic tax exemption limit is Rs. 2.5 lakh. If your income for a financial year exceeds beyond that limit, then your employer must deduct a TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and deposit the same to the government.

You might have changed your job in a single financial year or have worked with multiple employers simultaneously. If taxes are deducted in all of these places, then you have to collect separate forms from each employer. You will then have to combine the data from the separate forms to file your ITR.
